Review of Arietta

Basic specs..

The hull is made of hand laid fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of hand laid fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The interior is like most other boats made of teak. Teak has the advantage of being naturally very oily and therefore water-repellent, which is suitable on boats. The boat is equipped with 4 berths, a galley, 40.0 liter fresh water capacity and toilet facility.

The Arietta is equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Arietta is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.35 - 1.45 meter (4.43 - 4.73 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Arietta may be equipped with an inboard Yanmar diesel engine at 12 hp (8 kW). Calculated max speed is about 4.3 knots

The fuel tank has a capacity of 60.0 liters (15 US gallons, 13 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

The capsize screening value for Arietta is 1.82, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.3 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Arietta is about 122 kg/cm, alternatively 688 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 122 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 688 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Perheveneilyä jonmeri 33 -purjeveneellä, s/y solveig ii.

S/y Solveig II on malliltaan Arietta 31. Vene on vuodelta -74 ja runkonumeroltaan 266. Arietta on Olle Enderleinin vuonna 1962 suunnittelema meriristeilijä (havskryssare).

Me ostimme veneen vuonna 2011 Torniosta. Sen jälkeen venettä on kunnostettu ahkerasti ja lähes koko vene on käyty läpi. Kaikki kunnostusprojektit löytyvät blogista kunnostus -tunnisteen alta.

Myimme veneen tammikuussa 2018, ja Solveig II suuntaa keväällä uusille kotivesilleen Loviisan suuntaan.

Arietan historiasta löytyy ristiriitaista tietoa internetistä, mutta ensimmäinen vene tehtiin vuonna -63 ilmeisesti Enderleinille itselleen. Upeasti entisöity vene oli Ruotsissa myynnissä keväällä 2013.

Spinnuttelua Iniön aukolla kesällä 2017.

Ensimmäiset 20 venettä tehtiin mahongista vuosina -64-68, ilmeisesti Malön veistämöllä Ruotsissa. Olemme tosin myös nähneet yhden vuonna -74 rakennetun puisen Arietan.

Firma Erik Borg Arvikasta  aloitti Ariettojen valmistuksen lasikuidusta vuonna -68 . 60-luvulla veneiden sisätilojen viihtyvyys ei ollut suurin myyntivaltti, mutta 70-luvulla tähänkin alettiin kiinnittämään enemmän huomiota. Vuonna -74 valmistus siirtyi Fiskebäcks Båtvarville Göteborgiin, jolloin viimeistelyn taso parani huomattavasti.  Solveig II on Fiskebäcksin veistämä.

Salonki on viihtyisä, ja styyrpuurin sohva täyspitkänä soveltuu nukkumiseen.

Salongissa on seisomakorkeus 185 cm.

Runko on umpilaminaattia ja kansi on kerrosrakennetta vaahtoytimellä. Vesilinjan alapuolella laminaattia on yli 20 mm. Köli on valurautaa, ja veneessä on syvä vettä keräävä pilssi. Käyttöakut (2 x 70 Ah AGM, uusittu 2012) sijaitsevat turkin alla.

Veneen kaikki sähköt on uusittu meidän aikana. Valot ovat vähän virtaa kuluttuvia ledejä ja virran kokonaiskulutusta on helppo seurata NASAn akkumonitorista.

Pentteri rakennettiin uudestaan vuonna 2011. Kylmäboksi sijaitsee pentterin takakulmassa ja se kylmenee kompressorilla. Boksin tilavuus on noin 40 litraa.

Useammasta valmistajasta johtuen, veneiden sisätilat ja pohjaratkaisut vaihtelevat suuresti. Meiltä löytyy pistobunkka styyrpyyrin puolelta, osassa veneistä tässä kohtaa on navigointipöytä.

Pistobunkan ja keulapiikin garneeraukset tehtiin keväällä 2017.

Myös salongin ja vessan asetelmat eroavat toisistaan, riippuen siitä missä vene on tehty. Meillä vessa on vasemmalla puolella ja se jää normaalisti oven taakse piiloon.

Vessa on kompakti, mutta toimiva. Pönttö on uusittu vuonna 2015. Septitankin letkut uusittiin vuotta myöhemmin.

Keulapiikki on riittävän pitkä, jotta siinä mahtuu nukkumaan suorana. Leveys pään kohdalla on 180 cm.

Lämmityslaitteen toinen puhallusputki tulee keulapiikkiin, joten lämpö leviää tehokkaasti ja nopeasti koko veneeseen.

Lämmitys hoituu Safiren 2100D -lämmittimellä, joka asennettiin vuonna 2014. Laite on uskomattoman virtapihi, hiljainen ja varmatoiminen. Lämppäri on varustettu genius-ohjaustaululla, joka pitää huolen tasaisesta lämpotilasta.

Tekniset tiedot

Veneiden tarkka valmistusmäärä ei ole tiedossa, mutta oletettavasti niitä on tehty 250-300 kappaletta vuosina 1967-78.

Purjepinta-ala on vaatimaton n. 40 m².

Jos Arietan historia on hieman hämärän peitossa, myös teknisistä tiedoista liikkuu netissä useampia versioita. Lähinnä paino vaihtelee eri lähteissä. Voi olla, että toisissa paikoissa viitataan puurunkoisiin veneisiin ja toisissa uppouma ja painolasti on otettu lasikuituisen veneen tiedoista.

Veneen alkuperäinen moottori ei ilmene mistään dokumenteista, mutta muistelen jonkun edellisen omistajan kertoneen, että se olisi ollut malliltaan Volvo Penta MD7A. Alkuperäinen kone on vaihdettu vuonna -90 Perkins Perama M20-malliseen. Perkins myi pienet meridieselinsä Volvolle joskus 90-luvulla, joten käytännössä kone on sama kuin Volvon MD2020. Alkujaan kyse on kuitenkin japanilaisesta teollisuusmoottorista (Shibaura E643), joka on marinoitu.

Moottoria on kunnostettu ahkerasti viime vuosien aikana. Tarkemmat tiedot löytyvät blogista tunnisteella Perkins Perama M20 .

• Suuttimien kärjet ovat mallia DN4PD1
• Polttoaineen siirtopumpun mallinumero on 130506140 (löytyy Volvolta numerolla 3580100)
• Hehkutulpat NGK 6628 Y-107V

Meidän veneessä oli ostettaessa muista Arietoista poiketen rattiohjaus, joka oli asennettu vuonna -87, joten alkuperäinen se ei ollut. Whitlockin vaijerivälitteinen systeemi teki ohjailusta melkolailla tunnottoman, joskin se oli kevyt ohjata joka kelissä. Purjeiden trimmi tosin piti hakea nenällä haistelemalla.

Kevään 2015 aikana palautin veneeseen takaisin alkuperäisen pinnaohjauksen, joka toi sitloodaan hurjasti lisää tilaa. Samalla sitlooda maalattiin ja teakit uusittiin.

Pinna paikallaan. Maalasin peräkannen Internationalin Interdeck-maalilla, joka antoi kannelle hyvän pidon.

Pitkäkölinen vene kulkee pitkiäkin matkoja suoraan ilman autopilottia, kunhan purjeet on oikein trimmattu. Toki veneestä löytyy myös pinnapilotti (Simrad TP22).

Veneen runko maalattiin kesällä 2013. Tarkemmin tästäkin löytyy tietoa blogista .

Pohja soodapuhallettiin vuonna 2012. Vanhat pehmeät myrkyt poistettiin ja pohjaan vedettiin uudet epoksit sekä kova myrkkymaali.

Meillä purjeet ovat WB:n ja vuodelta 2002. Isopurje (16,5 m²) on vaakaleikattu ja varustettu kahdella reivillä. Etupurje on 140% (22,5 m²) Genoa, joka on Furlexin rullalla. Rullalaite (104S) uusittiin keväällä 2016. Lisäksi mukana kulkee spinaakkeri.

Purjeet kävivät Aura Sailsilla tarkastuksessa talvella 2014, jolloin etupurjeen UV-suoja uusittiin. Samalla isopurjeelle tehtiin uusi puomipeitto.

Tasaista menoa Kumlingen länsipuolella, ilman autopilottia. 

Nostimet ja reiviköydet jäävät mastolle, joten purjeiden käsittely tapahtuu kannelta. Nostimet ja jalukset on uusittu vuonna 2014.

Venettä on helppo hantteerata yksin ja yksinpurjehduksessa jalukset ovat hyvin kipparin ulottuvilla.

Kannen reunassa kulkee noin viiden sentin korkuinen parras, joten kannella on turvallista liikkua. Kansi tyhjenee itsetyhjennysreikien kautta, jotka on laminoitu rungon sisäpuolelle. Putket tulevat ulos vesilinjan alapuolelta, joten kannelta ei tule valumajälkiä kylkiin.

Jag tror att Arietta tillverkades från slutet av 1960-talet och fram till andra halvan 1970-talet. Enligt uppgift tillverkades hon fram till mitten av 1970-talet av firma Erik Borg i Arvika. Därefter togs tillverkningen över av Fiskebäcks båtvarv. Enligt uppgift tillverkades totalt cirka 250 exemplar.

I’d been planning all week to take advantage of an unseasonably mild day in our still basically snowless winter to shuffle boats, as the Arietta project was nearing its end (with a few small jobs remaining to complete), and I would soon be moving onto the next project, which was in the other side of the shop, but I wanted to have it in my main work bay and these transfers were always easier and more pleasant when it wasn’t cold, icy, or snowy outside.

To begin, I broke down and removed the staging from around the boat, clearing the way for me to move her into the other, newly-vacated, side of the shop.  I also moved in the mast from where I’d had it outdoors so it’d be ready to put back aboard the boat when the project was done after the next week or two.  Then I spent some time getting reorganized and set up in the new side of the shop so I could continue working.

The remaining punch list for this project included the new instruments, which I spent some time reading about and looking into the details of installation, particularly regarding the transducers.  The old depth  transducer would need to be removed, and my first minor attempt at removing the nut from inside went exactly nowhere, but gave me the information I needed in terms of planning the replacement.  While I’d hoped I could spin off the nut and easily remove the transducer now, I hadn’t really expected it to be like that, and now I could focus on the actual removal and other aspects of the instrument replacement in the coming days.

Similarly, for the first time I looked at the solar charge controller the owner had provided and that I needed to install and connect with the new solar panel on the sea hood, and I planned for this installation by ordering supplies I’d need (wiring and the correct crimping tool), and attempting to figure out just how I was going to run the wires through the boat.  This would all come together a bit later, once I received the supplies.

In the days ahead I also had to finish up some minor interior work, including reinstalling the shelves I’d removed earlier in the project (though for now I decided to await this till I figured out some of the wiring paths), and also finish up with the settee fiddles and that sort of thing.  But right now, a bigger priority was to finish up the paint work around the new through hulls and at the repaired liner at the aft end of the cabin, and I applied a coat of cream-colored semi-gloss paint to coordinate with the color of the existing liner.  I’d probably need to do a second coat over the weekend to wrap this up so I could finish with the new scupper hoses in the near future.

UPDATED: Ukraine confirms overnight strikes on Russian arms depots

The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces confirmed on the afternoon of Sept. 21 that the country's military and security service struck two Russian arms depots overnight.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed earlier the same day that its forces shot down and intercepted 101 Ukrainian drones overnight, while explosions were reported at ammunition depots in Krasnodar Krai and Tver Oblast.

Ukraine's General Staff confirmed a strike on the Tikhoretsk weapons depot in Krasnodar Krai, which it called one of three largest ammunition depots in Russia and "one of the key storage facilities in the Russian military's logistics system."

"According to available information, at the time of the attack, another echelon was on the territory of the arsenal, which delivered at least 2,000 tons of ammunition, including from the North Korea," reads the General Staff's report.

A Russian Podlet radar system that aided air defense of the arsenal was also destroyed in the attack, according to the Ukrainian military.

Veniamin Kondratyev, the regional governor, reported early on Sept. 21. that a drone strike in the Tikhoretsk district of Russia's Krasnodar Krai had caused detonations of "explosive objects" at an unspecified facility.

Russian air defense units intercepted two drones over the Tikhoretsk district, Kondratyev said. "The falling debris of one of them caused a fire that spread to explosive objects. A detonation began."

Local authorities have evacuated 1,200 residents from the area near the blast, Kondratyev said later the same day. No casualties have been reported.

Hours after the attack, Andrii Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine's state-run Center for Countering Disinformation, wrote that a depot was "demilitarized" in Russia's Tikhoretsk district and published videos allegedly showing the aftermath of the strike.

North Korea-made KN23 missiles, artillery shells, and ammunition for Smerch rocket launchers were stored in the Tikhoretsk depot, Kovalenko added.

Ukraine's General Staff also confirmed a strike on an ammunition depot in Tver Oblast that was earlier reported by Russian Telegram channels. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) hit the 23rd arsenal of the Russian Defense Ministry's Main Artillery Directorate near the village of Oktyabrsky in Tver Oblast, according to the General Staff.

The local government in Tver Oblast reported that an unspecified number of drones were shot down in the region but did not disclose any details on the consequences of the attack.

The facility is located near a weapons depot in Toropets , one of Russia 's largest arsenals, that was attacked by Ukrainian drones on Sept. 18.

Fire and detonation have been recorded in the areas of both Tikhoretsk and Oktyabrsky military arsenals, the General Staff added.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, 53 drones were intercepted over Bryansk Oblast, 18 over Krasnodar Krai, 16 over the Azov Sea, 5 over Kaluga Oblast, and 9 over Kursk and Smolensk oblasts and Russian-occupied Crimea.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify the claims.

Oil depot fire, casualties reported in Russia’s Krasnador Krai following Ukraine’s drone strike

On the night of May 31, 2024, Ukrainian drones targeted an oil depot at Port Kavkaz in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai, causing significant damage and casualties.

The attack resulted in fires at the depot, with reports of multiple employees being injured. Local authorities and Russian media confirmed the strikes, with some sources reporting the destruction of several oil tanks and ongoing efforts to extinguish the fires.

Local authorities say the fire originated at a fuel depot housing three petroleum tanks. According to Crimean Wind, the fuel is used to supply gas to Russian forces in parts of occupied Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.

Authorities claim that there are multiple casualties among the employees of the oil depot as a result of the strike.

A Ukrainian drone attack sparked a fire and damaged several storage tanks at a fuel depot in Russia’s Krasnodar region, the region’s crisis administration said on Friday.

About six drones were destroyed and debris fell on the refinery near the village of Yurovka, the administration said on the Telegram messaging app.

“Several tanks were damaged,” the administration said, adding no one was injured in the attack.

Drone attacks on energy facilities inside Russia’s territory have become more frequent in the past few months. Kyiv officials say that they conduct the attacks to undermine Russia’s war effort and respond to Moscow’s strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

The oil depot was last attacked on May 31, according to Russian state media.

Explosions reported in Russia's Krasnodar Krai and Rostov region

E xplosions were reported near a military town in Yeysk, Krasnodar Krai. Explosions were also heard in Tsimlyansk, Volgodonsk, and Samarskoye in the Rostov region, according to Russian media.

According to ASTRA, residents of Yeysk reported explosions near the military town. The publication noted that the area is home to a Russian Navy airfield, which hosts the 859th Center for Combat Employment and Retraining of Naval Aviation Flight Personnel of the Russian Navy and the 190th Mixed Training Aviation Regiment.

Russian military Telegram channels reported an attack targeting energy and military facilities in the Volgograd, Tambov, Oryol, Lipetsk, Tula, and Saratov regions, as well as in Kuban and Stavropol. According to these reports, between 70 and 150 drones were involved in the attack.

The governor of Krasnodar Krai claimed that an unmanned aerial vehicle was allegedly neutralized by electronic warfare forces in the village of Shabelskoye in the Shcherbinovsky district. The drone crashed into a tree and exploded, causing a blast wave that shattered windows and doors in a nearby house and damaged a car with debris. The governor stated that there were no casualties.

The governor of the Rostov region reported that air defense systems allegedly shot down four drones in the Azov district.

Strikes on military depots

Earlier, during the night of September 21, Russian military depots in Krasnodar Krai and Tver region were attacked.

According to RBC-Ukraine's sources, the attack on the depot in the Tver region was a special operation by Ukrainian forces, involving the Security Service of Ukraine, Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, and Special Operations Forces. It was confirmed that the strike targeted a missile and artillery storage facility where Russian forces kept Iskander tactical ballistic missiles, KN-23 ballistic missiles, Tochka-U tactical missile systems, guided aerial bombs, S-300 missiles, and artillery ammunition.

The strike on the missile depot in Toropets, Tver region, represents a significant achievement for Ukraine, as there are only 13 such depots in Russia.

Estonian intelligence believes that due to the strike on the warehouse in Toropka, Russia lost 2-3 months of shells.
